Things that
still work.

Stillworks Labs is an independent product laboratory. We design and build durable software, hardware, and systems — the kind that still work in ten years, after the trend that produced them has been forgotten.

A laboratory, not a studio.

A note on why we exist

Stillworks Labs is a product laboratory in Surrey, British Columbia. We are not an agency, not a consultancy, and not a startup in the usual sense. We are a small team that builds a small number of things — slowly, deliberately, and with the expectation that they will still work when the people who commissioned them have moved on.

The name is a promise and a test. A product that still works in ten years is a different kind of product from one that ships fast and breaks quietly. We are interested in the first kind.

Our work spans software systems, industrial design, and the materials that hold both together. We prototype in code and in metal. We write our own tools when the existing ones are not honest enough. We do not ship anything we would not be willing to maintain ourselves.

We are federally incorporated and privately held. Our clients are not published, but the things we build are — quietly, in the background of ordinary work.

02 · Work

Four kinds of durability.

Where our attention concentrates
Practice · I

Software that ages well

Systems built to be maintained, not just shipped. We favour boring technology, clear boundaries, and code that a new engineer can read without a diagram.

Longevity · Maintainability
Practice · II

Hardware that stays

Small-batch industrial design and prototyping — enclosures, interfaces, and physical products designed for repair and re-use rather than replacement.

Repairability · Materials
Practice · III

Tools for quiet work

Internal tools and instruments for people who do focused work — designed to recede into the background rather than demand attention.

Calm technology · Focus
Practice · IV

Research & reference

Small, deliberate research projects on durability, maintenance, and the long-term behaviour of digital systems. Published when finished, not before.

03 · Method

How we build.

Four operating principles
01

Prototype in the real material

Paper is for thinking. We move to working code or working metal as early as possible, because the constraints of the real material are the only constraints that matter.

02

Repair before replace

Every system we build is designed with its own maintenance in mind — clear interfaces, documented decisions, and a bias toward parts that can be swapped rather than rewritten.

03

Quiet by default

We do not build things that demand attention. No notifications, no dashboards that need to be watched, no interfaces that insert themselves into the user's day. The best tools are the ones you forget are there.

04

Publish when finished

We do not announce work in advance, and we do not ship half-built things to hit a date. When something is finished, it is published. Until then, it is in the lab.
